I think Shogun 2 had more depth to battles because the game itself was better, not specifically because of the special abilities. I actually know exactly what you are talking about with the second wind, as I use to work in construction/remodeling and have had it happen to me as well. In S2, one of my friend took a very long time to use his general and the different kinds of abilities well because he didn't like them and hates micromanaging. But I understand everybody do not like it. or die :P as a "competitive" player, I like that. But well, the games mechanic have change. I liked the way "fire arrows" worked from R1 better than today. But pushing the button at the right time in the right way should give you a little advantage that might give you victory. Of course, if you make mistakes on your global tactics but use your abilities, you should have no chance to win. And with the macromanagement of the battle, it's quite important. Now, with abilities, you have to think how and when to use them. In the fights, you had nothing to do, "just watching the battlefield" and look how the fights turned and think what to do then. Where should I put that unit ? where should I attack with my cav, my heavy infranty ? etc.

That second wind is something that happens! And can happen more than once, had this happen to me working construction quite often.although its technically third wind. I don't mind cooldowns, that's what happens when you use abilities, and in RL when you've been fighting for a long time.

I want to be thrown into the game by being given more options, and more controls that let me put more of my personal flavor into each battle. I want to be the CAUSE of that epic charge into hell! Not just a lucky dude who had no effect on the actual units ability. There just simply isn't the kind of control that I personally want. I disagree that the other ways are better. I agree, you could handle the abilities in a different way. XD Where as in games like S2 and R2 there is a lot more combat depth than before. Uhhh, Rome 1 didn't have nearly that much depth in combat my friend. I mean, rome 1 had all its abilities balanced without using a cooldown.

You have a cool ability that avoids this whole situation Scar Ace was talking about: Especially since there are other ways to balance abilities other than putting them on a cool down timer.īanzai in Shogun could have been a toggle ability by just decreasing the units defense while it was charging. But after reading this whole thread I agree with the OP and Scar Ace. Personally, I don't care about cooldowns and having special abilities that are unrealistic. Like people have said, fire arrows in Rome 1 was a toggle ability and it worked just fine. Pretty much all the cool down abilities could be represented in a more realistic fashion and be balanced accordingly. Have a toggle button for stampede that increases your speed at the cost of your stamina going down faster. 2K A Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia.846 A Total War Saga: Fall of the Samurai.
